Rethinking Culture: Characteristics Hoped For

by

As we rethink the cultures we find ourselves in, whether that be professionally, personally, or communally, it is imperative to have a vision that expands the horizon for what is possible. In an attempt to cast such a vision, I am suggesting a list of characteristics we hope for as we transcend the present culture. It is by no means exhaustive, but it is a start.

  • Goodness and kindness prevail
  • A soft place to land
  • People deeply care about each other
  • Polite and respectful
  • There is a spirit of natural generosity
  • Adult-like behavior where people want to contribute to the good of the whole
  • People feel and believe they belong and they want others to belong
  • The humanness of people is respected
  • People are supportive of each other
  • There is an air of equality
  • There is a sense of safety and security
  • Curiosity abounds, so new and well thought out perspectives are welcomed
  • Competency is expected
  • Work-life balance is a priority
  • A sense of service is required
  • Everyone’s voice counts, their thoughts matter
  • In private sector business, the profit motive is augmented by the service motive
  • There is room for idealism
  • Supportive, expansive, elastic-like rituals/slogans and symbols for the above
  • Stewardship/partnership/ownership mindsets prevail
  • There is an abundance of grace and graciousness
  • Abundance perspectives prevail
  • Atmosphere of chosen accountability
  • Leaders model wanted behaviors
  • Growth is encouraged and expected
  • There is intelligent and both-eyes-open loyalty
  • Egos/self-interest-perspectives/victimization mind sets find no oxygen
  • Good moral values prevail
  • Self and social development values are encouraged, protected, and even leveraged
  • Interconnectedness with like organizations/communities
  • There is an air of nobility
  • Dynamic atmosphere
